Product Description
The Gränsfors American Felling Axe is a professional axe for those who want to work in the forest in the traditional way. Developed by Gränsfors in conjunction with axe collector Lawrence Lyford and boat builder Geoffrey Burke, this axe is ideal for felling very large trees, thanks to its long, broad edge of 11.5 cm. The axe is forged to a curved bit, making it suitable for cutting into fresh, resinous wood such as spruce or pine. The heavy head and long handle also give considerable power to the cut. It’s also great for hewing, especially for notching and chipping.
There is one type of head, but 3 handles to choose from. This listing is for the 31" CURVED HANDLE version (MPN: 434-1). This axe is almost twice as heavy as the Scandinavian Forest Axe.
Comes to you sharp, with a protective leather sheath and a copy of "The Axe Book". Gränsfors Bruk give a 20-year guarantee on the axe head.

First use: I made two cuts through a fallen ash, about 18" or so in diameter, with little fuss. The ax handled great, and had no problem going right through the trunk. Quickly cut the trunk into sections. Easily the best ax experience I've ever had.
Second use: tackled a fallen Osage orange. I cleaned up the blade with a file and stone, and it took its original edge right back. Great, so far. First couple of cuts were true, deep, and felt just as good as the ash. No fuss, all chips, and some shockingly big ones for such a hard wood.. And then the bite felt wrong. I checked, and the whole beard had snapped off.
The tree I was cutting was about 3' off the ground, with soft leaf litter underneath. I didn't miss a swing; wasn't even swinging particular hard. Just knocking chips out, since the bole of this tree is closer to 22"...needed to pace myself for that kind of work.
Looking at the second pic, you can see what appears to be a weakness in the metal inside the head from when it was formed. There is a definite cavity, which was of course invisible on the beautiful new blade.
I'm unclear on how to contact the company for a replacement, and their website offers no immediate answer. Happy to adjust the rating to 5 stars where it belongs, *if* this is an anomaly and *if* the company quickly replaces the defective ax.
-----
EDIT: The seller promptly offered a refund, so I'm changing the overall rating to reflect both the the ax's potential and the seller's responsiveness! Excellent service. As soon as the ax is back in stock, I'll take a chance and purchase a new one. Presuming I just got the unlucky 1/1000 defect, this tool is well worth a second roll of the dice.

The heavy axe head makes splitting logs a breeze and the axe is hung so expertly that there is no vibration of any kind. A solid strike make a dull thunk type of noise and the wood seems explode of the face. The pall is hardened not to be used as a hammer but with the intention of budging rounds and the occasional split piece that just cannot let go of its other half. The axe comes "forge finished" which means that it is rough and has plenty of character building imperfection just the way you would want a forge made axe. Never understood the need for a polished axe... how long is the mirror finish going to last if you actually plan to use the instrument?
I used the axe for several hours and it is already my favorite axe of all time. Handle comes finished in BLO (boiled linseed oil) and rubbed with beeswax to keep the dirt off the hand. In a world of "take and toss" items this axe is an immediate family heirloom, and a tool to be treasured for many years to come.
Update: I got the same model axe from an approved distributor and made the exact same cut on the exact same tree. The axe showed no signs of use on the blade. I’m absolutely convinced the Amazon distributor knew about the factory flaw to the axe they sold me.
The axe was lightweight, great design and seemed to be good. I overpaid on Amazon because I couldn’t find a US Gransfors Bruk distributor with the American Felling Axe. Then when the axe arrived I tested it on an old pine on the property. 20 swings in with no knots and no issues and the edge had rolled.
I immediately called Gransfors Bruk’s US support line and quickly found it was a known manufacturers defect BUT because I had bought the axe from a company that wasn’t a distributor, I couldn’t get a refund or a new axe directly from GB. I packed the axe and sent it for a full refund which thankfully had no issues. I then placed my order directly through GB and now I have a perfect new American Felling Axe for $40 cheaper than the Amazon retailer.
